Additional information

One short-term fish toxicity test is available for C8-14AS TEA (CAS 85665-45-8; Richterich 2003). The test was performed with golden orfe (Leuciscus idus) according to DIN 38412 - L15 guideline. Mortality of fish caused by the test substance was determined after 24 and 48 hours of a static exposure to the concentration up to 64 mg/L of 46.8% pure technical product. The results showed that the 48-hour LC50 value was 8.9 mg a.i./L.

Since only a limited information (48-hour test) is available for C8-14AS TEA (CAS 85665-45-8), in accordance to Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006 Annex XI, 1.5 a read-across to another structurally related category member was conducted. Read across data from another C8-14 alkyl sulfate was used: C8-14AS NH4 (CAS 90583-10-1). Toxicity of alkyl sulfates is dependent on the carbon chain length and the influence of the counter ion can be neglected.

A GLP short-term fish toxicity test with C8-14AS NH4 (CAS 90583-10-1) was performed according to ISO 7346-1 guideline using zebra fish (Guhl 1992). Mortality of fish was determined under semi-static conditions after 24, 48, 72 and 96 hours of exposure to the concentrations up to 32 mg product/L (nominal concentration) of 32.9% pure technical product in water. The nominal concentrations were in agreement with the measured ones. The results showed that the 96-hour LC50 value was 5.3 mg a.i./L (nominal concentration).

Due to structural and property similarities with this category member the results of C8-14AS NH4 (CAS 90583-10-1) also can be applied for C8-14AS TEA (CAS 85665-45-8). The composition of the read-across substance C8-14AS NH4 (CAS 90583-10-1) used in the short-term fish experiment was: C8: 12%, C10: 12%, C12: 53%, C14: 23%. The same composition is applicable for C8-14AS TEA (CAS 85665-45-8). The reliable 96-hour LC50 value for fish is therefore 5.3 mg/L.
