Additional information

Appearance/physical state/colour

The test substance Stearic acid, esters with methyl α-D-glucoside is a light yellow wax-like solid at 20°C and 1013 hPa.

Melting Point

Its melting point was determined in a study performed according to OECD Guideline 102, using the differential scanning calorimetry method. Melting temperature: 50.5°C (1006.4 hPa), same melting point expected at 101325 Pa.

Boiling Point

In a guideline study according to OECD Test Guideline 103 (differential scanning calorimetry method) no boiling point was determined prior to decomposition. The test substance decomposes at higher temperatures.

Density

The density and relative density of Stearic acid, esters with methyl α-D-glucoside were determined in the study performed according to the OECD Guideline 109 (adopted on 27 July 1995). Based on the results of the study the density is determined to be 1048 kg/m³, the relative density is determined to be 1.048.

Granulometry

No study on granulometry was performed. According to REACH Regulation (Annex VII, 7.14, column II), the study on granulometry does not need to be done as the substance is not used in a granular form.

Vapour pressure

No experimental results on vapour pressure are available. The vapour pressure of Stearic acid, esters with methyl α-D-glucoside was calculated using EPIWIN v 4.00, MPBPWIN v1.43 (modified Grain method). The calculation yielded a very low vapour pressure: 1.28E-15 mm Hg (1.71 x 10E-13 Pa); 5.09E-22 mm Hg (6.79E-20 Pa); 4.35E-28 mm Hg (5.81E-26 Pa) and 4.4E-029 mmHg (5.87E-27 Pa) at 25°C for the mono-, di-, tri- and tetraester respectively. Based on these results no phase transition solid/gas is to be expected, the atmospheric concentrations of the test substance can be neglected.

Partition coefficient

No experimental result on partition coefficient of Stearic acid, esters with methyl α-D-glucoside is available. Stearic acid, esters with methyl α-D-glucoside is a substance of variable composition containing the mixture of all isomers of mono to tetra esters and free carboxylates (acids) moeities. Because of technical difficulty to perform an experimental study on a substance of complex chemical nature, an in silico method was conducted to get a hint on the physico-chemical data.

The partition coefficient of Stearic acid, esters with methyl α-D-glucoside was estimated using ACDLabs software program. The calculation yielded log P of 7.67; 16.61; 24.83; 33.18 for mono-, di-, tri- and tetraester and log P of -2.68; 7.83 for methylglucoside and stearic acid respectively.

Similar results were obtained applying EpiWeb v4.00, KOWWIN v1.68. The calculation yielded log Kow: 7.09; 13.91; 22.37 and 30.38 for for mono-, di-, tri- and tetraester respectively.

Due to missing information about the applicability of the calculation these models in respect to the substance under investigation the result should be treated with care.

Water solubility

The water solubility of Stearic acid, esters with methyl α-D-glucoside was determined according to the slow stir method described in ECHA Guidance on information requirements and chemical safety assessment, chapter R.7a, May 2008. The water solubility of Stearic acid, esters with methyl α-D-glucoside is <1 mg/L at 23°C.

Solubility in organic solvents

Stearic acid, esters with methyl α-D-glucoside is stable in organic solvents.

Surface Tension

According to REACH Regulation (Annex VII, 7.6, column 2), the study on surface tension needs to be performed as surface activity is a desired property of the material. According to Guidance on information requirements R7.1.6.4 the test does not need to be conducted, if the water solubility is below 1mg/L at 20 °C. In a study conducted according to the slow stirring method, the determined value was < 1 mg/L.

Flash point

According to REACH Annex XI, 1. a test for the determination of the flash point of the substance is scientifically unjustified, because the flash point refers to liquids (REACH guidance R7.1.9). The substance is solid at ambient temperature; therefore determination of the flash point is not required.

Auto flammability

The study on the auto-flammability was performed according to the EU Method A.16. No auto-ignition of the test substance was observed.

Flammability

Based on the results of the study performed according to the EU Method A.10 (Flammability of Solids), the test substance is not highly flammable.

Explosiveness

In accordance with REACH Annex VII, 7.11, column II testing of the explosive properties does not need to be conducted as there are no chemical groups associated with explosive properties present in the molecule.

Oxidising properties

No testing on oxidising properties was performed. According to REACH Regulation (Annex VII, 7.13, column II), testing of oxidising properties needs not to be conducted as the test substance does not contain any structural groups known to be correlated with a tendency to react exothermically with combustible material.

Dissociation constant

The testing on dissociation constant is scientifically not justified. The substance under investigation cannot dissociate due to a lack of relevant functional groups.

Viscosity

Testing of the viscosity is technically not feasible, as the substance is a wax-like solid. In accordance with REACH Annex XI, 1 a test on viscosity does not need to be conducted.
