Description of key information

The n-octanol/water partition coefficient (Kow) is defined as the ratio of the equilibrium concentrations of a dissolved substance in a 2-phase system consisting of the largely immiscible solvents n-octanol and water. 
Kow = [X]n-octanol / [X]water
(where [X] indicated the concentration (mass/volume) in the specific solvent)
Octanol is regarded as a model solvent that mimics lipids in organisms and humans, and organic carbon in oils and sediments. (Guidance on information requirements and chemical safety assessment – Chapter R.7a: Endpoint specific guidance; p. 100)
According to column 2 of Annex VII (standard information requirements for substances manufactured or imported in quantities of 1 tonne or more) of Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006, a study does not need to be conducted if the substance is inorganic.
Graphite, acid-treated is an inorganic solid, consisting of natural graphite and variable amounts of either intercalated nitric acid or acetic acid.
Due to the inorganic character of the substance, performance of a study to determine the partition coefficient is not required under Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 (REACH).
