Description of key information

Nickel (Ni), cobalt (Co) and manganese (Mn) are the main components of the target substance. They are present as nickel dihydroxide, and cobalt dihydroxide, and manganese oxides/hydroxides. Based on the chemical assays of the tested samples, the amount varies as follows: nickel 15-50%, cobalt 10-25%, manganese 0.01-20%, respectively. Also sulfur is present at 0.1-0.2%.
Nickel and cobalt are considered the major drivers for adverse effects in the environment based on their properties and relative quantity in the substance. The solubilities for cobalt (<0.4 mg/l) and manganese (<0.2 mg/l) were below the respective detection limits. In only one sample the solubility of nickel (2.1 mg/l) exceeded the detection limit, and was in the low range of slightly soluble (0.1-100 mg/l).
The shaking time for the samples was 14, 15 and 16 days. The pH of the water solution was measured to vary between pH 7-9. The pH was not adjusted by addition of any reagents during the course of solubility testing.
