Additional information

Since the tetrahydrofuran - boron trifluoride complex rapidly decomposes in water, the biodegradability of the decomposition products tetrahydrofuran and boron trifluoride dihydrate is examined. With 39 % biodegradation in 28 days, observed in the OECD test 301 D (van Ginkel, 1992), tetrahydrofuran is not readily biodegradable, but was shown to be inherently biodegradable in further tests (BASF AG, 1991; BASF AG 1992; JETOC, 2002).

Boron trifluoride dihydrate is inorganic and is therefore not subject to biodegradation.
