Fire-fighting measures

- Extinguishing media: Use fire extinguishing methods suitable to surrounding conditions.
- In case of fire, the following can be release: metal oxide fume
- Protective measures: Use personal protective equipment.
- Additional information: Dispose of fire debris and contaminated fire fighting water in accordance with official regulations. Collect contaminated fire fighting water separately. It must not enter the sewage system.

Accidental release measures

- Personal precautions: Wear protective clothing.
- Environmental precautions: Do not allow to enter sewers/surface or ground water.
- Clean-up methods: Absorb with liquid-binding material (sand, diatomite, acid binders, universal binders, sawdust).

Handling and storage

- Handling: Avoid formation of respirable particles.
- Fire and explosion protection: The product is not flammable.
- Storage:
Requirements to be met by storerooms and receptacles:
· Colloidal silica should be stored above 2 °C. Freezing temperatures can cause irreversible precipitation of the silica, therefore the product should be located in heated buildings. Avoid routine storage temperatures above 43 °C.
· Information about storage in one common storage facility: Store away from foodstuffs.

Exposure controls / personal protection

Exposure limit values:

AGW (ALVEO) (Germany): Short-term value: 6 A mg/m³; Long-term value: 3 A mg/m³; TRGS 900 2.4 Abs. 8, 9 in Verbindung mit Abs. 10
AGW (EINATEM) (Germany): Short-term value: 20 E mg/m³; Long-term value: 10 E mg/m³; TRGS 900 2.4 Abs. 7 2.4 Abs. 11

Exposure controls:

- General protective and hygienic measures:
The usual precautionary measures are to be adhered to when handling chemicals. Do not breathe dust or spray mist.
- Respiratory protection: If the WEL value is exceeded, Filter A/P2
- Eye protection: Safety glasses.
- Skin and body protection: Use suitable protective clothing and gloves, selected with regard for use conditions and exposure potential.
- Hand protection: Wear gloves for the protection against mechanical hazards according to EN 388. Check the condition of the gloves prior to each use. Check the permeability prior to each anew use of the glove. The glove material has to be impermeable and resistant to the product/ the substance/ the preparation. Selection of the glove material on consideration of the penetration times, rates of diffusion and the degradation. Use gloves of stable material (e.g. nitrile), if necessary tricoted to improve the wearability. Preventive skin protection by use of skin-protecting agents is recommended. After use of gloves apply skin-cleaning agents and skin cosmetics.
Material of gloves: EN 388: minimum requirement for efficiency level 1 for all groups. The selection of suitable gloves does not only depend on the material, but also on further marks of quality and varies from manufacturer to manufacturer.
For the permanent contact in work areas without heightened risk of injury (e.g. Laboratory) gloves made of the following material are suitable: Butyl rubber, BR; nitrile rubber, NBR. Not suitable are gloves made of the following materials: Leather gloves, Strong material gloves.
Recommended thickness of the material: >=0.35 mm
Permeation time of glove material: EN 420: Minimum requirements for efficiency level 1 for all groups. For the substance, the permeation time must be 480 min at least (permeation according to EN 374 part 3: level 6). The exact break through time has to be obtained from the manufacturer of the protective gloves and has to be observed.
- Environmental exposure: Refer to applicable national, state and local regulations. Do not allow product to reach sewage system, groundwater and any water course.

Stability and reactivity

- Stability: No decomposition if used and stored according to specifications.
- Possibility of hazardous reactions No dangerous reactions known.
- Conditions to avoid: In case of thermal decomposition caused by smouldering and incomplete combustion toxic fumes may be developed.
- Incompatible materials: Protect from contamination.
- Hazardous decomposition products: No dangerous decomposition products known.

Disposal considerations

- Waste treatment methods
· Recommendation: Disposal must be made according to official regulations.
· Waste disposal key: The disposal of the product has to be carried out in accordance with the legal requirements. EWC waste codes are strictly industry-oriented, therefore waste classification has to be done by the waste producer.
- Uncleaned packaging
· Recommendation: Disposal must be made according to official regulations.
· Recommended cleansing agents: Water, if necessary together with cleansing agents.
