A reliable study shows that Behenyl Bottoms, characterized asC18-22, distillation residues (CAS No. 1160164-88-4) are “inherently biodegradable” in water. This study is used in a read-across approach for Alcohols, C12 -18, distn. residues.

In Annex IX column 2 of the REACH Regulation, it says that a study on the "Biodegradation in Water and Sediment” and a study on “Biodegradation in soil” does not need to be conducted if “direct and indirect exposure of sediment (soil) is unlikely”.  Therefore, a study on the "Biodegradation in Water and Sediment” and a study on “Biodegradation in soil” " does not have to be conducted for alcohols, C12 -18, distn. residues.
