Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Tests for acute toxicity to fish and invertebrates and toxicity tests on algae were available for sulfopropyl acrylate (SPA). Both, the short-term fish and short-term invertebrate test, were conducted as limit tests according to GLP with 100 mg/L and showed no mortality/ immobilisation. In the test on algae, observed inhibition effects led to an ErC50(72 h) of 25.72 mg/L and ErC10(72 h) of 1.613 mg/L.

Since no studies on the toxicity to aquatic microorganisms are available for sulfopropyl acrylate (SPA), a ready biodegradability study is used to derive a NOEC for the toxicity to aquatic microorganisms. For sulfopropyl acrylate (SPA) a biodegradation test according to OECD guideline 301 D is available (Mead, 2001). The test includes a toxicity control, which contains 5 mg/L of sulfopropyl acrylate and 1.5 mg/L of the reference material (i.e. sodium benzoate). The toxicity control attained 27 % degradation after 14 days of incubation. Hence, the substance is not toxic to aquatic microorganisms in the toxicity control. The test item concentration of 5 mg/L is used as NOEC.
