Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

OCTANOIC ACID, ZINC SALT, BASIC:

Octanoic acid, zinc salt, basic is readily biodegradable and fatty acids degrade by the β-oxidation pathway. The environmental fate and distribution of the dissociation products of this substance in water are better assessed according to the dissociation products in water as follows:

(i) the mechanisms for partitioning of Zn2+ in environmental media, including the adsorption and/or absorption by organic matter and living cells, are understood to be different from those traditionally attributed to carbon-based substances. For the transport and distribution of zinc over the different environmental compartments, please see the hazard assessment of "Zinc" within the framework of Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 as described in the respective assessment entity for "Zinc".

(ii) QSAR estimates indicate an affinity of fatty acids to solid phases. A Koc values of 69.63 L/kg for octanoic acid was estimated based on QSAR using EPISuite (V.4.00 - 4 .11) and log Kow of 3.05. However, fatty acids are readily biodegradable by sludge microorganisms and also by soil/sediment microorganisms and thus expected to get readily biodegraded while adsorped and not to accumulate.
