Description of key information

Lactides undergo rapid hydrolysis, forming lactic acid. Therefore, lactic acid is the only relevant species in the environment. According to REACH Annex IX, section 9.1, long-term toxicity testing shall be proposed if the chemical safety assessment according to Annex I indicates the need to investigate further the effects on aquatic organisms. However, lactic acid is practically non-toxic to aquatic organisms. Corrected for the pH effect, no hazard was identified for lactic acid. Therefore, based on the chemical safety assessment according to Annex I, testing of long-term toxicity to invertebrates is not required.
