Persistence

Studies are available which indicate that 2,3 -epoxypropanol (glycid) is readily biodegradable. It is therefore expected that it will degrade rapidly and to be completely mineralised. It is not expected to be persistent.

Potential to accumulate

QSAR-predicted and measured log 10 Kow values for 2,3 -epoxypropanol are less than 3.0. The potential for it to bioaccumulate in the tissues of organisms that inhabit aquatic or terrestrial matrices contaminated with 2,3 -epoxypropanol is therefore negligible. The risk that 2,3 -epoxypropanol (glycid) may biomagnify through successive trophic levels of aquatic or terrestrial food chains is consequently also negligible.

Environmental fate and behaviour

Studies have been to illustrate the short-term toxicity of 2,3 -epoxypropanol to fish, alga and aquatic invertebrates. The lowest endpoint from these studies (96 -hour LC50 fish) was 50.1 mg/L. As the substance is readily biodegradable, it is not expected to be toxic to the aquatic environment.

According to Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008 and Directive 67/548/EEC, no classification is triggered based on available data.
