Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Additional information

Reaction mass of bis(2-hydroxyethanaminium) sulfite and 2-(methylamino)ethanol - oxosulfane oxide (1:1)is soluble in water and dissociates to 2 -(methylamino)ethanol, (2- hydroxyethyl)ammonium and sulphite ions.

Since no studies on the aquatic toxicity of the substance are available, study reports and published literature about the toxic effects of 2-aminoethanol, 2 -(methylamino)ethanol and substances of the sulphite category have been consulted alternatively.

The 21 day NOEC of 2-aminoethanol (CAS 141-43-5) derived from toxicity testing with Daphnia magna according to OECD guideline 211 was determined to be 0.85 mg/L [NITE, 1996].

The hazard assessment of 2-(methylamino)ethanol (CAS 109-83-1) reveals neither a need to classify the substance as dangerous to the environment, nor is it a PBT or vPvB substance, nor are there any further indications that the substance may be hazardous to the envrionment. Therefore, a long-term toxicity testing in aquatic invertebrates is not provided.

There is one guideline study available on the chronic toxicity of disodium disulphite (CAS 7681-57-4) to Daphnia magna which has been conducted according to OECD 211 [BASF AG, 1993]. At test termination after 21 days, a NOEC of 8.41 mg SO32-/L was determined.
