Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.
The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information
Additional information
For this endpoint, the read across between PWH/ammonium and PWH/sodium salt is valid, because this environmental toxicology is defined by the main component. The read across justification that takes into account the ammonium ion properties is attached on section 13 of the dossier.
Studies on short-term toxicity to fish, aquatic invertebrate and aquatic plants in freshwater have been performed on the similar substance Paraffin waxes and Hydrocarbon waxes C14-17, chloro, sulfochlorinated, low sulphonated, saponified (SSP1) with the following results:
LC50 freshwater fish = 67.5 mg/l
EC50 Daphnia 48h = 0.22 mg/l
IC50 algae 72h = 95.1 mg/l on grow rate
The most sensitive species from those results seems Daphnia. Therefore a daphnia test has been repeated on three representative sample of the same substance Paraffin waxes and Hydrocarbon waxes, chloro, sulfochlorinated, saponified (SSP3, 4 and 5). They have different characteristics in composition: one sample has the same molecular chain distribution than sample SSP1, but is very different in hydrophilicity, content of salifiable portion (SO3), that seems the most important factor that can have an influence on the aquatic toxicity. The greater bioavailability for sample SSP4 supports even stronger the influence of the SO3% content on aquatic toxicity:
IC0 | IC50 | IC100 | C chains | SO3 | |
SSP1 | 0,01 | 0,22 | 10,00 | 14-17 | 2,5-3,5 |
SSP4 | 1,90 | 3,80 | 20,70 | 14-17 | 10,50 |
SSP3 | 4,30 | 44,90 | 100,00 | 18-30 | 5,50 |
SSP5 | 50,00 | 100,00 | 100,00 | 20-30 | 3,00 |
Based on this result the tests on Fish and Algae has not been repeated and the results on the similar substance Paraffin waxes and Hydrocarbon waxes C14-17, chloro, sulfochlorinated, low sulphonated, saponified (SSP1 have been taken as conservative results also for the registering substance.
Those results are indicating a slight toxicity for the aquatic environment, not enough to trigger a classification for acute toxicity.
Long-term toxicity was not tested because direct and indirect exposure is unlikely due to the fact that the substance is readily biodegradable and has no potential for bioaccumulation based on Kow <<4.
