Appearance/physical state/colour

Experimental results indicate the chemical 3-oxoglutaric acid to be a colouless amorphous organic solid with characteristic odour at 30oC and 990 hPa

Melting point/freezing point

The melting point of 3-oxoglutaric acid was determined to be 138oC at atmospheric pressure of 990 hPa. The sample did not decompose or submlimate at the melting point. This value at 101 325 Pa is equivalent to 141.24oC

Boiling point

The experimental value of the boiling point of the chemical 3-oxoglutaric acid was found to be 300oC at atmospheric pressure of 990 hPa. There was no decomposition observed at the boiling point. This value at 101 325 Pa is equivalent to 307.04oC

Density

The density of 3-oxoglutaric acid by the mass by volume method was found to be 0.60 g/cm3 at room temperature of 30 degC. This value at 20oC is equivalent to 0.90 g/cm3

Particle size distribution (Granulometry)

The particle size distribution (granulometry) of 3-oxoglutaric acid by the sieve analysis method was found to be in the range of 75 micrometer to 300 micrometer. Majority of the particles were found to be in the size range of 150 micrometer.

Vapour pressure

Vapour pressure of 3-oxoglutaric acid was estimated to be 0.0000409 mm Hg (Modified Grain Method). This value when converted into pascal is equivalent to 0.00545 Pa.

Partition coefficient

The experimental partition co-efficient value of 3-oxoglutaric acid was found to be 0.3157 (Log Pow = -0.500) at a temperature of 30oC and pH of 2.60

Water solubility

The water solubility of 3-oxoglutaric acid was found to be 510 g/L at 30oC and neutral pH. Thus, it is concluded that the chemical is very soluble in water.

Solubility in organic solvents / fat solubility

The solubility of 3-oxoglutaric acid in methanol was found to be 465.1 g/L at 30oC. Thus, it is concluded that the chemical is very soluble in methanol.

The solubility of 3-oxoglutaric acid in petroleum ether was found to be 332 mg/L at 30oC. Thus, it is concluded that the chemical is moderately soluble in petroleum ether.

Surface tension

In accordance with column 2 of Annex VII, since surface activity is not a desired property of the chemical, this end point was considered for waiver

Flash point

The experimental value of flash point of 3-oxoglutaric acid by the open cup method was found to be 200 degC at 990hPa.Thus, it is inferred that the chemical shall not have a tendency to flash. This value at 101 325 Pa is equivalent to 204.69oC

Auto flammability

3-oxoglutaric acid does not catch fire at room temperature and pressure. Thereby, it can be inferred that the chemical is not auto-flammable.

Flammability

The chemical 3-oxoglutaric acid caught fire when the flame of bunsen burner having temperature of 950oC was brought in contact with it. However, since such high temperature conditions do not exist during transportation or use of the chemical it can be concluded that the chemical is non-flammable.

Explosiveness

This end point was considered for waiver since there are no chemical groups associated with explosive properties present in the molecule of 3-oxoglutaric acid.

Oxidising properties

The chemical 3-oxoglutaric acid was found to have mild oxidising property since 122.71 ml of KMnO4 was required to get the end point of the redox titration. However, this oxidising property is very mild and does not classify the chemical as an oxidising solid.

pH

The pH of 1% solution of 3-oxoglutaric acid was found to be 2.10 at 25oC. Thus, it can be concluded that the chemical is strongly acidic.

Dissociation constant

The experimental average value of the dissociation constant of 3-oxoglutaric acid was found to be 0.00009411 at 30oC. This value is equivalent to 0.0001411 at 20oC considering the dissociation reaction to be an endothermic reaction.

Viscosity

The chemical 3-oxoglutaric acid is a solid and since viscosity is an inherent property of liquids, this end point was considered for waiver
