The effects on adult emergence are not interpreted as toxic effects, but rather are related to the physical properties of the test material as they settled to the bottom of the test chamber.
Inhibition of larval growth is discussed as generalised response of the midges to adverse environmental conditions, and here probably reflects a growth lag resulting from the ingestion of the nonnutritive zeolite particulates during feedings.
