Description of key information

Water paste form: NON EXPLOSIVE
Dry form: EXPLOSIVE

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

FORM OF WATER PASTE:

NON EXPLOSIVE

Literature data available describe the substance as explosive if it is in dry form:

- Dust explosion possible if in powder or granular form, mixed with air. May explosively decompose on shock, friction, or concussion (International Program on Chemical Safety, 1996).

- Prolonged exposure to fire or heat may result in the spontaneous decomposition and heating with a resultant explosion. /Dinitrophenol solutions/ (Association of American Railroads, 2005)

- Forms explosive salts with alkalis and ammonia (Lewis, R.J. , 2004)

The compound is used in the form of a water paste to suppress its explosive properties.

Dinitrophenol, wetted, with not less than 15% water, by mass is classified with UN number 1320, class 4.1 classification code DT (solid desensitized explosive) according to ADR European Agreement concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road). -

DRY FORM:

EXPLOSIVE

Literature data available describe the substance as explosive if it is in dry form:

- Dust explosion possible if in powder or granular form, mixed with air. May explosively decompose on shock, friction, or concussion (International Program on Chemical Safety, 1996).

- Prolonged exposure to fire or heat may result in the spontaneous decomposition and heating with a resultant explosion. /Dinitrophenol solutions/ (Association of American Railroads, 2005)

- Forms explosive salts with alkalis and ammonia (Lewis, R.J. , 2004)

2,4-dinitrophenol in dry form has explosive properties.

Dinitrophenol, dry or wetted with less than 15% water, by mass is classified with UN number 0076, class 1, classification code 1.1D according to ADR European Agreement concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road).

Justification for classification or non-classification

The usual "market form" is not considered dangerous for explosive propriety.

2,4-dinitrophenol in dry form has explosive properties; nevertherless due to its dangerous proprieties the substance is putting into the market wetted with no less than 15 % of water.
