Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Test data is available on the acute toxicity of nickel slag and analogue substance copper slag to fish. The results demonstrate that nickel slag is not acutely toxic at the concentration tested : 96 h LC50>100g/l or 96 hr LC50 (for fish) >100 mg/l

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

A reliable OECD 203 guideline study was performed which assessed the acute toxicity of analogue substance copper slag (Sauerwald and Weiss, 2004) toLeuciscus idusin a limit test. The 96 h LC50 for copper slag was found to be >100 g/L. No mortalities or adverse effects were noted at this concentration. Typical slag sample has been tested which is similar to the composition of nickel slag as outlined in IUCLID Section 1.2. Based on read across no acute aquatic toxicity is predicted for the target substance nickel slag.

The calculated classification of nickel slag via Toxic unit approach (Higher Tier Arche CLP Tool) resulted in No acute classification for the UVCB substance. Based on this result, the related criteria provided the estimated value for acute (short term) toxicity to aquatic fish (see EU CLP Guidance Annex I Table 4.1.0):96 hr LC50 (for fish) >100 mg/l

Using a weight of evidence approach, the acute toxicity of nickel slag to fish is greater than 100 mg/l which means No classification.
