Description of key information

The TFAH is corrosive (see § 7.3.1). Therefore, considering the strong corrosive properties of TFAH, it is scientifically unjustified to perform a repeated dose toxicity by inhalation at concentrations recommended by the guidelines, i.e. the limits of concentration leading to classification for target organs. In fact,  strong corrosive effects would be observed at these concentrations. 
However, a modified acute toxicity study by inhalation which has been performed on trifluoroacetic acid (TFA), the relevant substance of TFAH (see § 7.1) was therefore considered. This study included three concentrations of exposure and relevant additional examinations including broncho-alveolar lavage analysis and upper respiratory tract histopathology in order to determine NOAEC for local effects (irritation). Considering that the local effects (irritation inducing destruction of membrane) are mainly driven by concentration rather than by time of exposure, it is assumed that a long-term DNEL for local effects could be derived from the acute DNEL for local effects derived from the acute toxicity study by inhalation, applying a worst-case assessment factor of 6. Moreover, the long-term DNEL for local effects would be sufficiently protective from the potential systemic effects for the worker since the local effects would be likely observed at lower concentrations.
