Description of key information

The EC50 of 3-(3-isopropylphenyl)butanal to sewage sludge micro-organisms was estimated to be 50 to 100 mg/L based on read-across from an appropriate analogue substance.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC50 for microorganisms:
50 mg/L

Additional information

An appropriate structural analogue, 3-(3-isopropylphenyl)butanal (tradename Florhydral), has been tested for toxicity to microorganisms. A GLP compliant activated respiration inhibition study was performed in accordance with a standardised guideline with a sufficient level of detail to assess the quality of the presented data. The study was performed to a good standard and was assigned a reliability score of 2 using the principle for assessing data quality as set out in Klimisch (1997) on the basis that the endpoint is being addressed using read-across.

The read-across is considered to be suitable based on the structural and 'mechanistic action' similarities between the target substance (3-(3-isopropenylphenyl)butanal) and source substance (3-(3-isopropylphenyl)butanal) and their similar physico-chemical and environmental fate properties.
