Additional information

Since no studies investigating the toxicity of Fatty acids, coco, decyl esters (CAS 93455-79-9) to activated sludge microorganisms are available, in accordance to Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 Annex XI, 1.5 a read-across to the structurally related source substance Fatty acids, C8-10, C12-18-alkyl esters (CAS 95912-86-0) was conducted. The read-across substance is representative to evaluate the toxicity of Fatty acids, coco, decyl esters (target substance) to activated sludge microorganisms.
The target substance is a UVCB substance specified by mainly C12 linear fatty acids esterified with a linear alcohol of a chain length of C10. The source substance Fatty acids, C8-10, C12-18-alkyl esters is a UVCB substance predominantly consisting of esters with a C8-C10 fatty acid and a C12-C14 alcohol moiety. Comparing both substances it can be seen that they have a very similar structure. Thus, it is considered justified to use the source substance to predict the long-term toxicity to aquatic invertebrates of the target substance. In this case of read-across, the best suited (highest degree of structural similarity, nearest physico-chemical properties) read-across substance was used for the assessment.

The study with the source substance fatty acids, C8-10, C12-18-alkyl esters (CAS 95912-86-0) was performed according to OECD 209 (GLP) investigating the toxicity to microorganisms (Hammer, 2013). Activated sludge microorganisms (from a municipal wastewater treatment plant) were exposed to the test substance up to a nominal concentration of 1000 mg/L. No effects were observed based on the respiration rate after 3 h of incubation resulting in an EC10 (3 h) of > 1000 mg/L. An increase of respiration was recorded in all treatments compared to the control values.

Based on the available result from one structurally related read-across substance (in accordance to Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 Annex XI, 1.5) which is characterized by a comparable structure, it can be concluded that Fatty acids, coco, decyl esters will not exhibit effects on activated sludge microorganisms.
