Description of key information

There are Guideline skin and eye irritation studies for the reaction product - Marlon ARL. The skin irritation study reports the substance is highly irritating; a Category 2 Irritant per EU guidance. Marlon ARL also had irritating effects on the eyes. All animals showed some irreversible damage leading to a Category 1 classification per EU guidance.

Additional information

In addition to the skin (OECD 404 guideline) and eye (OECD 405 guideline) irritation studies with the substance to register, Marlon ARL, there are skin and eye irritation studies for the two substances that comprise Marlon ARL that can serve as supporting, read across studies. The 3 skin irritation studies with CAS No. 12068-03-0 sodium toluenesulfonate indicate slight irritation in guideline studies with full recovery at 48 hours.

The eye irritation guideline study with the same substance indicate moderate irritation but one of the three animals did not fully recover in 21 days. The key skin irritation study with CAS No. 68411-30-3 sodium 4-undecylbenzenesulfonate showed moderate to severe irritation to skin and the effects were not fully reversible within 14 days. The eye irritation study with the same substance showed that when not rinsed, damage to the eyes due to the test substance was not reversed within 21 days.

There are a number of additional supporting skin and eye irritation studies for other members of the hydrotropes category. The hydrotropes appear not to be as irritating as the alkylbenzenesulfonate which has irritation properties more closely aligned with those of the substance to register, Marlon ARL.

Effects on skin irritation/corrosion: highly irritating

Effects on eye irritation: highly irritating

Justification for classification or non-classification

A study comparable to OECD guideline 404 found that the test substance is considered a Category 2 irritant according to EU GHS guidelines based on persistent irritation.

A study comparable to OECD guideline 405 found the test substance is a category 1 eye irritant based on EU GHS guidelines.
