Description of key information

Toxicity of tetradonium bromide to microorganisms in sludge is based on read across to hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide. Data for sludge inhibition by hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide are collected from the literature. There are diverging evidence for sludge inhibition. The IC50 value 19 mg/l, reported will be used for derivation of PNEC (stp).

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC50 for microorganisms:
19 mg/L

Additional information

Data on toxicity to microorganisms were obtained for sludge inhibition and for effects on metabolism of microorganisms in a standard test with Photobacterium phosphoreum. Compared to the studies on inhibition of microorganisms in sludge, studies on toxicity in low-biomass test systems have generally indicated much higher toxicity under these conditions. In most cases the microbial populations have not been acclimated by previous exposure to the substances. Therefore the significance of these tests is doubtful for representing the toxicity in wastewater treatment systems.
