Endpoint:
explosive properties of explosives
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Study period:
From 4 September 2012 to 13 November 2012
Reliability:
1 (reliable without restriction)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
guideline study
Reason / purpose:
reference to same study
Reason / purpose:
reference to same study
Reason / purpose:
reference to same study
Qualifier:
according to
Guideline:
EU Method A.14 (Explosive properties)
Deviations:
no
GLP compliance:
yes (incl. certificate)
Key result
Parameter:
thermal sensitivity - Koenen test: diameter of the orifice plate
Remarks on result:
not thermal sensitive if heated under defined confinement
Remarks:
no explosion observed in the first test series using a nozzle plate with a hole of 6 mm diameter
Key result
Parameter:
sensitiveness to impact: impact energy (J)
Remarks on result:
not sensitive to impact using an impact energy of 40 J
Key result
Parameter:
sensitiveness to friction: friction load (N)
Remarks on result:
not sensitive to friction using a friction load of 360 N

Friction test

Six negative assays were recorded: no friction sensitivity was noted with the test item with a loading of 360 Newtons.

Mechanical sensitivity (shock)

Six negative assays were recorded: no shock sensitivity was noted with the test item.

Heat sensitivity (flame)

Six negative assays were recorded: no heat sensitivity was noted with the test item.

Observed reactions:

For all the assays, two main reactions were observed:

1) Overflow (and eventually projections) at the beginning of the observation period,

2) Green flame at the end of the observations period.

Interpretation of results:
study cannot be used for classification
Conclusions:
Yttrium trinitrate was not considered to have explosive properties under the conditions of the EC A.14 test method.

Description of key information

Following a GLP study performed in accordance with the EC Method (A.14), yttrium trinitrate is concluded not to be explosive (Demangel, 2012; Klimisch 1).

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Explosiveness:
non explosive

Additional information

The experimental data show that yttrium trinitrate is not sensitive to friction, shock or heat.

Justification for classification or non-classification

Although the results of an EC A.14 study cannot entirely be used for classification, the results of this study, together with the absence of structural alerts as well as the experience in day-to-day handling and use of the substance, allows concluding that yttrium trinitrate is not to be classified for explosiveness.
