Description of key information

A reduction of toxicity over time takes place and it has been shown that the microbial degradation of oil sands naphthenic acids is the predominant factor in the reduction of the acute toxicity of the process-affected water. Considering the available information on biodegradability and toxicity reduction soil simulation testing seems inappropriate.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

The biodegradation and reduction of toxicity upon biodegradation is discussed in IUCLD section 5.2.1 and 5.2.2.
