Most of the discussed hydrophobic cosmetic ingredients as the given C20-22 Alkyl Phosphate possess long-chain aliphatic hydrocarbon, moieties and esters functions, which are common in natural-source substances such as fatty acids, lipids, hydrocarbons, and waxes. Such chemicals can therefore be expected to be susceptible to enzymatic biotransformation processes, many of which are ubiquitous in bacteria as well in higher as well as in higher organisms. Fore instance, organic ester compounds consisting of at least one long-chain fatty acid (or fatty alcohol) are easily accessible to hydrolytic processes brought about by esterase, these play an important role in general lipid metabolism. Therefore it is very likely that chemicals typical structural element of natural (lipid) constituents easily undergo biotransformation once the chemical has entered the living cell. Accordingly, many of these substances are evaluated as being readily biodegradable (bacterial degradation) and are also metabolized. The non-readily biodegradability noted at concentrations higher than the water solubility cut-off noted with C20-22 Alkyl Phosphate according to the current guidelines was expected due to the emulsifier, dispersant properties of tension-actives.
