Preliminary test

The Oxypyrion acetate/ cellulose mixture ignited almost immediately when the flame came in contact with it. The mixture burnt with a yellow/orange flame and produced black smoke. The whole sample burned through in approximately 4 minutes, quietly with no vigorous reaction.

Train test

For the 10%, 20%, 30% and 40% mixtures of test substance with cellulose, the train burnt along the outer surface with wicking. Unburnt material was found in the core of the train after the test was completed.

For the 60% mixture of test substance with cellulose, the train ignited almost immediately on contact with the flame, a yellow flame and black smoke were produced. The train burned along outer surface only. Unburnt material was found in the core of the train after the test was completed.

For the 70% mixture of test substance with cellulose, the train ignited and burnt with a yellow flame, a large amount of black smoke was also produced. The flame wicked along the surface. Unburnt material was found in the core of the train after the test was completed.

For the 80% mixture of test substance with cellulose, the train burnt slowly with a yellow flame and black smoke. The train also melted and cooled to leave a black residue.

For the 90% mixture of test substance with cellulose, the end of the train melted but no burning or ignition occurred during the 2-minute period of heating.

As the burning rates of the test substance mixtures at 30%, 40% and 50% were the highest giving burning rates of 1,38; 1,45 and 1,42 mm/second, respectively, the test was then repeated a further five times for each of these mixtures. The maximum burning rate for the Oxypyrion acetate/cellulose mixtures in this further test was 1,38 mm/sec at 40% test substance, which compared with 1,43mm/sec for the 60% reference substance mixture.

This suggested Oxypyrion acetate may be oxidising and further evaluation was carried out, using Kieselguhr instead of cellulose, in order to check for a false positive test.

* A previous reference substance test had been carried out with 18,02 g of barium nitrate plus 11,99 g of cellulose. This gave a burning time over 200 mm of 250 seconds, which gave a burning rate of 0,8 mm/second. As this was below the expected value of 1 mm/second, the procedure was repeated.

 

False positive test

The mixtures at 10 and 20 % Oxypyrion acetate failed to ignite.For the mixture at 30%, burning occurred along the outer surface and the flameextinguished after 77 mm.

For the mixtures at 40%, 50% and 60%, a flame was observed to wick along the outersurface of the train leaving unburnt test substance on the inside of the train. The flame was yellow and gave off sooty smoke.For the mixtures at 70% and 80%, a flame was observed to wick along the outer surface of the train leaving unburnt test substance in the core of the train. The train also partly melted leaving a black residue.

For the mixture at 90%, the end of the train melted, no burning or ignition occurred within the 2-minute test period.

The burning rates in the presence of Kieselguhr were slightly lower than those of any mixtures containing cellulose but the pattern of burning rates was similar. This indicates that Oxypyrion acetate cannot be oxidising because an oxidising material would show no propagation of any reaction through any of the mixtures of the test substance and Kieselguhr. Full results are shown inTable 4. The burning characteristics recorded throughout the test are not indicative of oxidation.The calculated oxygen balance does not indicate that Oxypyrion acetate is likely to be oxidising.

It is therefore concluded, that the high burning rates seen in the presence of cellulose are attributable to true burning of the Oxypyrion acetate/cellulose mixtures and not to an oxidising reaction.
