Three studies are available on the toxicty of octane to terrestrial plants. However, only the study by Hulzebos et al. (1993) is considered reliable. Lettuce (Lactuca sativa) seeds were exposed to soil treated with octane at concentrations of 1000 mg/kg (soil dry weight). Examination of germination on day 7 and 14 showed no effects. The authors also assessed germination in a nutrient solution containing octane. Here octane did not show any effects up to the limit of solubility.
For the purpose of risk assessment, soil PNECs for hydrocarbon blocks incorporated into the PETRORISK model have been derived using aquatic PNECs and the equilibrium partitioning method (EqP). The outcome of the risk assessment with RCRs far below 1, i.e. regional RCRs of 1.1E-07 and 1.7E-10 for agricultural soil and grassland, respectively, and local RCRs for agricultural soil in the range of 2.0E-04 and 1.6E-07 do not indicate a risk to the terrestrial environment (see localCSR and regionalCSR in PETRORISK spreadsheet attached in IUCLID section 13). Thus, no further testing is required.
