Additional information

The aromatic sulphonic salts are soluble in water and are neither sorptive, nor volatile, nor bioaccumulative. These substances completely ionise in water even at low pH. A category has been considered for the assessment comprising sodium hydroxybenzene sulphnate, toluene sulphonate, cumene sulphonate, xylene sulphonate, benzene sulphonate. Also the acid form is completely dissociated in water, therefore also studies on the acid form have been considered for environmental assessment. In total, 7 biodegradation studies - support a conclusion of ready biodegradability. These substances are neither hydrolysable nor photolysable. In summary, the aromatic sulphonic salts as a category are not persistent and they should partition primarily to the water compartment. The same characteristics apply also to the disulphonated derivative and obviously to the sodium salt, that is the inorganic main component.
