Results and discussion

Clinical signs:
His initial reaction was contact dermatitis. It suddenly worsened 5 days later, when he sought medical attention for left-sided deep calf pain.
Results of examinations:
Five days after a spill to the leg of a 12-year old mixture of chemicals, 7% of which was an unspecified isomer of vinylpyridine, the leg area displayed livid erythema and marked swelling of the lower legs. There was also increased local temperature and superficial paraesthesia. The affected area was well demarcated over the left foot. The appearance was consistent with a superficial partial thickness burn.
Outcome of incidence:
After 10 days of medical treatment, the erythema and dermal oedema was significantly improved, leaving areas of patchy skin discolouration.

The main constituent of the original chemical was subsequently identified by mass spectroscopy as 7% m/m vinylpyridine, although the isomeric and polymeric status were unknown.

Applicant's summary and conclusion

Conclusions:
This is a case report of a burn to the skin of a worker from a mixture of chemicals 12 years old. The identify of the main constituent was a vinylpyridine, although the isomeric identity was not established. Contact dermatitis progress into a deep tissue burn after 5 days. After another 10 days of medical treatment, the burn was significantly healed.
