Additional information

Freshwater aquatic toxicity data were available for three tropic levels: fish, invertebrates and algae. No adverse effects were observed in any of the available acute tests with LC50 >100, >1000 and >1000 mg/L respectively. In a long term reproductive toxicity test with aquatic invertebrates, the NOEL was found to be >100 mg/L. MMB is inherently, ultimately biodegradable and has a low log Kow (0.18) so long term exposure to or bioaccumulation in aquatic organisms is not expected. In an activated sludge respiration inhibition test MMB had no effect on the activated sludge at a limit test concentration of 1000 mg/L. It is considered that the respiration inhibition of MMB is low because an EC50 >1000 mg/L of the substance was determined in this test.
