First-aid measures

Warning before intervention
Spillages make surfaces slippery

Inhalation
Inhalation at ambient temperature is unlikely because of the low vapour pressure of the substance. Exposure to vapours may however occur when the substance is handled at high temperatures with poor ventilation.
Symptoms: irritation of the respiratory tract due to excess fume, mists or vapour exposure.
In case of symptoms arising from inhalation of fumes, mists or vapour: Remove casualty to a quiet and well ventilated place if safe to do so.
If the casualty is unconscious and:
- not breathing – ensure that there is no obstruction to breathing and give artificial respiration by trained personnel. If necessary, give external cardiac massage and obtain medical assistance.
- breathing: place in recovery position. Administer oxygen if necessary.
Obtain medical assistance if breathing remains difficult.

Skin Contact
Symptoms: dry skin, irritation may arise in case of repeated or prolonged exposure.
Remove contaminated clothing and footwear, and dispose of safely.
Wash affected area with soap and water.
Seek medical attention if skin irritation, swelling or redness develops and persists.

Eye Contact
Symptoms: slight irritation (unspecific).
Rinse cautiously with water for several minutes. Remove contact lenses, if present and easy to do so. Continue rinsing.
If irritation, blurred vision or swelling occurs and persists, obtain medical attention.

Ingestion/aspiration
Symptoms: few or no symptoms expected. If any, nausea and diarrhoea might occur.
Always assume that aspiration has occurred. Seek professional medical attention or send the casualty to a hospital. Do not wait for symptoms to develop.
Do not induce vomiting as there is a risk of aspiration.
Do not give anything by mouth to an unconscious person.
If vomiting occurs, the head should be kept low so that the vomit does not enter the lungs (aspiration). Once vomiting ceases, place the person in the recovery position with the legs slightly raised.

Fire-fighting measures

Extinguishing Media
- Foam (Specifically trained personnel only)
- Water fog (Specifically trained personnel only)
- Dry chemical powder
- Carbon dioxide
- Other inert gases (subject to regulations)
- Sand or earth

Unsuitable Extinguishing Media
Do not use direct water jets on the burning product; they could cause splattering and spread the fire.
Simultaneous use of foam and water on the same surface is to be avoided as water destroys the foam.

Combustion Products
Incomplete combustion is likely to give rise to a complex mixture of airborne solid and liquid particulates and gases, including carbon monoxide and unidentified organic and inorganic compounds.

Protective Equipment for Firefighters
In case of a large fire or in confined or poorly ventilated spaces wear full fire resistant protective clothing and self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) with a full face-piece operated in positive pressure mode.

Accidental release measures

Personal precautions
Evacuate people upwind from the spill area. Alert emergency personnel. Eliminate fire risk by keeping ignition sources out of the area.

Environmental precautions
Do not release into the ground, waters or sewersystem.

Clean-up methods
Immediately start clean-up of the liquid and contaminated soil. Small amounts can be collected using absorbent material. Pay attention to the fire and health hazards caused by the product. Large spillages may be cautiously covered with foam, if available, to limit fire risk. When inside buildings or confined spaces, ensure adequate ventilation. Absorb spilled product with suitable non-combustible materials. Collect free product with suitable mechanical means.

Handling and storage

Storage
Storage area layout, tank design, equipment and operating procedures must comply with the relevant European, national or local legislation.
Storage installations should be designed with adequate bunds so as to prevent ground and water pollution in case of leaks or spills.
Cleaning, inspection and maintenance of internal structure of storage tanks must be done only by properly equipped and qualified personnel as defined by national, local or company regulations.
Store separately from oxidising agents.

Recommended and Unsuitable Materials for Storage
Recommended materials: For containers, or container linings use carbon steel, stainless steel.
Unsuitable materials: Some synthetic materials may be unsuitable for containers or container linings depending on the material specification and intended use. Compatibility should be checked with the manufacturer.

Container Advice

Exposure controls / personal protection

Appropriate engineering controls:
Minimize exposure to mists/vapours/aerosol. Before entering storage tanks and commencing any operation in a confined area (e.g. tunnels), carry out an adequate clean-up, and check the atmosphere for oxygen content and flammability.

Hand protection:
When there is a risk of contact with the skin, use hydrocarbon-resistant, felt-lined gloves. Adequate materials: nitrile (NBR) or PVC with a protection index > 5 (permeation time > 240 mins). Replace gloves immediately in case of cuts, holes or other signs of damages or degradation.
Personal hygiene is a key element for an effective hand care. Gloves must be worn only with clean hands. After wearing gloves, hands must be carefully washed and dried.

Eye protection:
When there is a risk of contact with the eyes, use safety goggles or other means of protection (face shield).

Skin and body protection:
Long-sleeved antistatic clothing, if necessary heat-resistant. Wash contaminated clothing before reuse. Antistatic non-skid safety shoes or boots, chemical resistant, if necessary heat resistant and insulated.

Respiratory protection:
Independently from other possible actions (technical modifications, operating procedures, and other means to limit the exposure of workers), personal protection equipment can be used according to necessity. Open or well ventilated spaces: if the product is handled without adequate containment means for the vapours: use full or half-face masks with filter for hydrocarbon vapours (AX). Closed or confined areas (e.g. tank interiors): the use of protection measures for airways (masks or self-contained breathing apparatus), must be assessed according to the specific activity, as well as level and duration of predicted exposure. If exposure levels cannot be determined or estimated with adequate confidence, or an oxygen deficiency is possible, only SCBA’s should be used.

Stability and reactivity

The substance is stable, according to its intrinsic properties. None hazardous reactions in normal conditions of storage and handling. Contact with strong oxidizers (peroxides, chromates, etc.) may cause a fire hazard. A mixture with nitrates or other strong oxidisers (e.g. chlorates, perchlorates, liquid oxygen) may create an explosive mass. Sensitivity to heat, friction or shock cannot be assessed in advance.

Incompatible materials: Strong oxidants

Conditions to avoid: Keep away from open flames, hot surfaces and sources of ignition. Avoid the build-up of electrostatic charge. Do not smoke. Thermal decomposition generates toxic fumes.

Disposal considerations

Waste treatment methods:
Do not dispose of the product, either new or used, by discharging into sewers, tunnels, lakes or water courses. Deliver to a qualified official collector. Empty containers may contain combustible product residues. Do not cut, weld, drill, burn or incinerate empty containers or drums, unless they have been cleaned, and declared safe.

Sewage disposal recommendations:
Do not apply industrial sludge to natural soils. Sludge should be incinerated, contained or reclaimed. Dispose of in a safe manner in accordance with local/national regulations.
