Samples form ten sites were collected, mainly areas where a variety of chemicals were used and discharged. The sites included sewage treatment plants. industrial wastewater treatment plants, rivers, lakes, seas. 1 L sample of sludge, surface soil, water and etc. was collected and then mixed together.
After removal of the floating matter and settling, the pH of the supernatant was measured to be 7. The supernatant was colelcted and aerated for 23.5 h. 30 minutes after the aeration was stopped, 1/3 of the supernatant was discarded. Then equal volume of solution containig 0.1 % of glucosem peptonem potassium prthophosphate was added and the aeration was continued. This procedure was repeated once a day for a month. The temperature was kept at 25 ± 1 °C and the pH at 7 ± 1. After one month the sludge was used as microbial inoculum. Before the start of the test a small amount waa dried to determined the wet weight of the sludge.

The inoculum concentration used for the test was 30 mg SS/L.

Analytical results

TOC Analyzer was used to determined the total organic carbon in the samples. The Limit of Detection (LOD) was 0.280 µg C and the limit of quantitation was 1.12 µg C.

The TOC of the test item in solutions in reaction bottles were measured at thebeginning and the end of the test. Prior to the TOC measurement, the solutions wereoscillated for 10 min using ultrasonication to ensure homodisperse.

Note: the carbon content of the test item was calculated to be 79.25%.

Validity criteria fulfilled:
yes
Interpretation of results:
inherently biodegradable
Conclusions:
The test item showed 31 % biodegradation in a Modified MITI Test. Therefore, the test item is considered to be not readily biodegradable, but inherently biodegradable as more than 20 % biodegradation was observed.
Executive summary:

The ready biodegradability of the test item was determined with an activated sludge over a test period of 28 days in the Modified MITI Test (I) according to OECD 301C, Regulation (EC) No. 440/2008 Method C.4-F and Guidelines for the testing of chemicals, SEPA, P.R. China No. 301C "Modified MITI Test (I)" 2004. The test item was tested at a concentration of 100 mg/L in triplicates, corresponding to carbon content of 79.25 % and theoretical oxygen uptake of 3.09 mg O2/mg test item. The total organic carbon was measured with TOC Analyzer. The biodegradation of the test item came to 30.85 % after 28 days. The reference item showed 81.74 % degradation after 28 days. In conclusion, the test item is not readily biodegradable as the pass level of 60 % degradation was not reached in a 10-d-window within the 28 days period of the study. As more than 20 % biodegradation was observed, the test item can be cosidered as inherently biodegradable.

Description of key information

The test item degraded to 31 % in the modified MITI test. Based on this results, the test item is considerd as not readily biodegradable. As the test item showed more than 20 % biodegradation in the MITI test, the test item can be cosidered as inherently biodegradable.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Biodegradation in water:
inherently biodegradable, fulfilling specific criteria
