Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Endpoint:
activated sludge respiration inhibition testing
Type of information:
experimental study
Remarks:
the tested substance is a structural analogue of the salt
Adequacy of study:
key study
Reliability:
2 (reliable with restrictions)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
other: Study well documented, meets generally accepted scientific principles, acceptable for assessment
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
OECD Guideline 209 (Activated Sludge, Respiration Inhibition Test
Principles of method if other than guideline:
The purpose of the study was to determine the toxicity of five purehomologues of LAS to the activated sludge of a treatment plant basically operating on domestic sewage. A contact time of 3 hours instead of 15 minutes was chosen to better simulate the real residence time used in wastewater treatment plants (4-6 hours).

Results with reference substance (positive control):
The 3-hour EC50 range for the reference substance (3,5-dichlorophenol) ranged from 20- 30 mg/L, within the valid range of 5-30 mg/L
Validity criteria fulfilled:
yes
Conclusions:
Acute toxicity to Microorganism (activated sludge): 3hr-EC50 is 500-723 mg/L (nominal).

Description of key information

The toxicity of the acid and amine towards micro organisms as present in waste water treatment systems is low. The acid has the lowest EC50 of 500 mg/L (Verge & Moreno 1996). The value for the amine is recalculated from a handbook value.

500 mg/L will be taken as starting point for the PNEC calculation of the salt.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC50 for microorganisms:
500 mg/L
