Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Additional information

Direct Red 16:1 is expected to be a substance with a low potential for adsorption based on the partition coefficient Kow of 0.0019 (R&C, 2012).

However, literature on similar substance 04 reports that adsorption to sediment of highly sulfonated bis(azo) dyes can be expected due to surface interaction of the sulphonated groups (Weber E. J., 1991, in National Industrial Chemicals Notification and Assessment Scheme, 1992). DIrect Red 16:1 however has two sulphonate groups less than the DR23 and therefore less adsorption to sediment is expected.

Under standard test conditions no ready biodegradation was observed for similar substance 02. According to OECD guideline 302B, no biodegradation of similar substance 02

based on CO2 evolution and calculated as % ThCO2 was observed in the Clariant key study of 2007 (Clariant, 2007): less than 20% degradation was attained after 28 days of contact time.

Direct and indirect exposure of sediment and soil is unlikely, since environmental exposure only occurs through industrial waste water.
