Description of key information

Basing on the result in item 4.19 (Bailey): further test could be waived on the DSC test which showed that exothermic decomposition energy is less then 500 J/g and the onset of the exothermic decomposition is below 500 °C.

DSC performed in 2015 see also in 4.19 lead to a heat of decomposition result of 513 J/g. So a SADT test (result: substance not classified as self- reactive) was performed and the substance was tested according to UN Test 2(b): "Koenen Test" and UN Test 2(c)(i): "Time/pressure Test".

UN Test 2(b): "Koenen Test"

:No explosions were observed using the 1 mm orifice plates, i.e. Limiting Diameter below 1 mm; test result negative according to the criteria and the substance did no show a violent effect on heating or confinement

UN Test 2(c)(i): "Time/pressure Test":

1. In all three tests, the upper pressure threshold of 2070 kPa was not achieved. 2. In accordance with the criteria of UN Test 2(c)(i), the outcome of the test is considered to be “–” (i.e. negative). 3. The test substance shows no deflagration when ignited under confinement.

The substance gave negative results when tested for its sensitivity to heating under confinement and ignition under confinement with UN Test 2(b) and 2 (c)(i). The test for shock sensitivity was not required as the heat of decomposition is less than 800 J/g.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Explosiveness:
non explosive

Additional information

Waiver- basing on the result in 4.19 from DSC, Bailey:

The substance does not contain any functional groups identified in the UN recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods, Manual of Tests and Criteria (Fifth revised edition, 2009, ST/SG/AC.10/11/Rev.5), Appendix 6, Table A6.1, as being associated with explosive properties (remark: based on the examples given the term "C-C unsaturation" is understood as not to include a single carbon-carbon double bond).

A test on the thermal stability (DSC, see IUCLID section 4.19) showed, that the exothermic decomposition energy is less then 500 J/g and the onset of the exothermic decomposition is below 500 °C (UN TGD, Manual of Tests and Criteria, Appendix 6, 3.3 c)).

Justification for classification or non-classification

Waiver-basing on the result in 4.19 from DSC, Bailey:

According to the additional criteria for classification 2.1.4.3(a), of Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008, Annex I, part 2, if the molecule does not contain functional groups associated with explosive properties, the substance shall not be classified.

The results from the studies (see below) according to UN Test 2(b): "Koenen Test" and UN Test 2(c)(i): "Time/pressure Test" showed the the result is "negative". The substance is not explosive.

UN Test 2(b): Koenen Test

1. No explosions were observed using the 1 mm orifice plates,i.e.Limiting Diameter < 1 mm.

2. In accordance with the criteria of UN Test 2(b), the Limiting Diameter is less than 2 mm and the outcome of the test is considered to be “–” (i.e. negative).

3. The test substance shows no violent effect on heating under confinement.

UN Test 2(c)(i): Time/Pressure Test:
