Description of key information

Following a 4 hour occluded exposure to rabbit skin, undecanol (branched and linear) was not a skin irritant (group mean 24+48+48 hour scores <2) (Biolab 1985; rel 2). The test substance was however, found to be an eye irritant based on 24+48+72 hour scores for conjunctival redness of 2 in all rabbits and persistence to 7 days (Biolab 1985; rel 2).

Additional information

The key information was the only available data on the test substance.

In some cases the CAS and chemical identity stated refer to SDA nomenclature for this substance. in REACH substance identification it is necessary to be more specific as to the chain lengths present. Full details may be found in the CSR

Effects on eye irritation: irritating

Justification for classification or non-classification

Based on the available information on the irritation potential of undecanol (branched and linear), the test substance is proposed to be classified as a category 2 irritant to eye, whereas no classification and labelling is proposed for skin irritation, in accordance with the EC regulation 1272/2008.
