An experiment concerning hydrolysis of magnesium sulfonate target substance (CAS 231297-75-9) was not carried out using OECD Guideline 111 / EU Method C.7 for the following reasons:

- Although the water solubility of the test substance was determined to be 1.98 x 10-4 g/L (Fox, 2013), the result may have been higher than expected based on the chemical structure of the test substance. Therefore, the test solution concentration required would be impractically low to perform the hydrolysis test as a sufficiently sensitive and reliable analytical method was not available. Mass spectroscopy, although a sensitive detection technique had been observed to have variable response (possible due to interferences) and would still be expected to be not sensitive enough for the expected test solution concentration.

- The test substance is a complex mixture (UVCB) for which the test guideline for hydrolysis is not recommended with components having different hydrolytic rates.

The representative structure of the test substance contains a phenyl sulphonate functional group and this suggests that hydrolysis at environmentally relevant pHs and temperature would not readily occur. Testing is waived in accordance to REACH, Annex VIII, Section 9.2.2.1 (column 2).
