Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Sugar Factory Lime (SFL) has a melting temperature greater than 450 °C.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

The melting point of Sugar Factory Lime (SFL) was determined in a GLP study performed in accordance with EU Method A1 (O'Connor and Woolley, 2010). The melting temperature was > 723 K (>450 °C). The substance underwent a single endothermic thermal event on initial heating but no phase transition (i.e. melting) was associated with this and a cyclic heating program supported simple dehydration as its origin.

The melting point of SFL is supported by data on calcium carbonate from several peer reviewed handbooks which indicate that calcium carbonate decomposes without melting at temperatures greater than 450 °C.
