Description of key information
The 96-h LC50 for fish was determined to be 4.2 mg/L (Markert & Weigand, 1984). The study was conducted with the zebra fish (Danio rerio) equivalent to OECD guideline 203 and in compliance with GLP.

Different 96-h LC50 values obtained for several fish species have been published. These data are only available as secondary literature or as short abstract and their reliabilities are therefore not assignable. As the tested AOS has not been specified, the length of the C chains is unknown. As longer-chain AOS are more toxic than those with shorter alkyl chains (Little, 1993), the observed toxicity to fish increases with the alkyl chain length in the range between C12and C18.It is thus necessary for a reliable hazard assessment to consider the chain length of the test compound. As two guideline studies have been performed with AOS of C14-16 chain length, the more sensitive study has been set as key study. Both studies have been conducted with zebra fish (Danio rerio) equivalent to OECD guideline 203 and in compliance with GLP resulting in 96-h LC50 values of 4.2 mg/L and 12.2 mg/L.
