Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Additional information

Several biodegradation tests are available for alpha olefin sulfonates, the tests were conducted in freshwater medium and also with saltwater as inoculum.

The key study investigates the biodegradation of Sulfonic acids, C14-16 (even numbered)-alkane hydroxy and C14-16 (even numbered)-alkene, sodium salts in a modified Sturm test according to OECD guideline 301B using domestic activated sludge as inoculum. After 28 days the test substance was degraded by 80 % (Bazzon, 1997). Hence, the test substance is readily biodegradable according to OECD criteria.

Further, the biodegradation rates in all tests were above the trigger values for ready biodegradation indicating that the test substance is readily biodegradable in freshwater as well as in marine compartment.
