Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

In conclusion, the reaction mass of magnesium carbonate and magnesium hydroxide and

magnesium oxide and magnesium peroxide was not toxic to waste water (activated sludge) bacteria at or below a loading rate of 30 mg/L.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC10 or NOEC for microorganisms:
120 mg/L

Additional information

An activated sludge respiration inhibition test was carried out according to OECD guideline 209 and GLP. The reaction mass of magnesium carbonate and magnesium hydroxide and magnesium oxide and magnesium peroxide was administered to the test system at concentrations of 0, 10, 30, 100, 300 and 1000 mg/L.

No statistically significant inhibition of the respiration rate of the sludge was recorded at or below a loading rate of 30 mg/L of the reaction mass of magnesium carbonate and magnesium hydroxide and magnesium oxide and magnesium peroxide. At loading rates between 100 and 1000 mg/l the statistical significant inhibitory effect was between 14 and 26%. It can thus be concluded that the reaction mass of magnesium carbonate and magnesium hydroxide and magnesium oxide and magnesium peroxide was not toxic to waste water (activated sludge) bacteria at or below a loading rate of 30 mg/L, and the 3-h NOEC is 30 mg/L. Furthermore, a 3-h EC10 of 120 mg/L and a 3-h EC50 of > 1000 mg/L were determined based on the results of the test.
