Phototransformation in air
This is not a standard information requirement in Annex IX of Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006.
Hydrolysis
According to Annex VIII (Paragraph 9.2.2, Column 2) of the REACh regulation 1907/2006 a test on hydrolysis does not need to be conducted if the substance is readily biodegradable or highly insoluble in water. In addition alcohols are generally resistant to aqueous environmental hydrolysis. Therefore, pentanol branched and linear is not expected to hydrolyze in the environment.

Biodegradation
Biodegradation in water: screening test:
The ready biodegradability of the test substance was examined according to ISO DIS 9439 (Ultimate Aerobic Biodegradability - Method by Analysis of Released Carbon Dioxide). The test substance was degraded by 80 - 90 % (CO2 evolution) and 90 – 100 % (DOC removal) after 28 days.
The ready biodegradability of the test item was assessed in a read across category approach based on grouping of substances. The surrogate test substances were found to be readily biodegradable. Thus, the pentanols are considered as readily biodegradable.
Biodegradation in water and sediment
The substance is considered as readily biodegradable. Therefore, no further testing on biodegradation is required according to Annex IX (Paragraph 9.2.1, Column 2) of the REACh regulation 1907/2006.
Biodegradation in soil
The substance is considered as readily biodegradable. Therefore, no further testing on biodegradation is required according to Annex IX (Paragraph 9.2.1, Column 2) of the REACh regulation 1907/2006.
Bioaccumulation
Bioaccumulation: aquatic/sediment
Significant accumulation of the test substance in organisms is not to be expected. For pentanol branched and linear the log kow was determined in a range of 1.21 – 1.51 (Range of the three isomeres (71 -41 -0 Pentan-1-ol, 137 -32 -6 2-Methylbutan-1-ol and 123 -51 -3 3-Methylbutan-1-ol).
Bioaccumulation terrestrial
Data on terrestrial bioaccumulation in soil are not required for REACh registration.
Transport and distribution
Adsorption/Desorption
In accordance with Column 2 of REACH Annex VIII, the study does not need to be conducted, if the substance has a low potential for adsorption (e.g. the substance has a low octanol water partition coefficient), or the substance and its relevant degradation products decompose rapidly. The substance has a log Kow < 3 and is considered to be readily biodegradable. Testing is therefore not required.
