Description of key information

The environmental exposure assessment according to Annex XI of Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006, section 3 performed for this substance shows that the Risk Characterization Ratio (i.e. PEC/PNEC ratio) for the aquatic compartment is < 1 and therefore, under the current exposure conditions, Reaction mixture of Glycerol 1,3- di(acetate), glycerol acetate and triacetin does not pose a risk to aquatic organisms. 

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

No experimental studies investigating the long-term toxicity of Reaction mixture of Glycerol 1,3- di(acetate), glycerol acetate and triacetin to fish are available. The chemical safety assessment according to Annex I of Regulation (EC) 1907/2006 does not indicate the need to investigate further the long-term toxicity to fish. Based on the available data, no effects were observed in short-term studies with fish and aquatic invertebrates.

Moreover, no effects were observed up to a measured concentration of 94 mg/L (NOEC ≥ 94 mg/L) in a chronic study with Daphnia magna according to OECD 211 with the read-across substance triacetin (CAS 102-76-1). This read-across is justified since triacetin is one of the major constituents of Reaction mixture of Glycerol 1,3- di(acetate), glycerol acetate and triacetin. Based on the broad dataset of short-term studies for both substances, the target and the source substance, it is unlikely that Reaction mixture of Glycerol 1,3- di(acetate), glycerol acetate and triacetin lay out of the overall ecotoxicological profile compared to triacetin.

It is not likely that aquatic organisms are chronically exposed to the test substance since it will be ultimately degraded in sewage treatment plants (readily biodegradable). Moreover, the environmental exposure assessment according to Annex XI, section 3 performed for this substance shows that the Risk Characterization Ratio (i.e. PEC/PNEC ratio) for the aquatic compartment is < 1 and therefore, under the current exposure conditions,Reaction mixture of Glycerol 1,3- di(acetate), glycerol acetate and triacetindoes not pose a risk to aquatic organisms. Thus, due to animal welfare reasons and to avoid unnecessary vertebrate tests, no further long-term test with fish is required for Reaction mixture of Glycerol 1,3- di(acetate), glycerol acetate and triacetin.
