Details on test solutions:
PREPARATION AND APPLICATION OF TEST SOLUTION (especially for difficult test substances)
- Method: The test solutions were prepared by suspending 111.7 mg/L in demineralized water, subsequent stirring for 24h and filtration. The resulting stock solution was defined as saturated solution. This stock solution was used for preparing the highest concentration, the further concentrations were obtained by subsequent dilution of the stock solution.
- Eluate: no
- Differential loading: no
- Controls: yes, test medium control
Test organisms (species):
Desmodesmus subspicatus (previous name: Scenedesmus subspicatus)

Conclusions:
The EC50 (72 h, growth rate) was higher than 100 mg/L. However, at 100 mg/L the inhibition of growth reached 39.7%. Thus, the threshold for alagal toxicity is below 100 mg/L. The NOEC (72 h) was 8.91 mg/L.
Executive summary:

Picolinamid phenylether was studied in an acute algal growth test. Cell growth was determined at 0, 24, 48 and 72 hours by cell counting. The test cocentrations were between1 and 100 mg/L with a spacing of 10. Growth was inhibited at the highest concentration tested, but were below 50%. Therefore, the EC50 was determined to be higher than 100 mg/L.

Description of key information

The EC50 (growth rate) was higher than 100 mg/L. However, at 100 mg/L the inhibition of growth reached 39.7%. Thus, the threshold for alagal toxicity is below 100 mg/L. The NOEC was 8.91 mg/L. (Bayer AG, 2013).

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC10 or NOEC for freshwater algae:
8.91 mg/L
