Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Materials and methods

Test guideline
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
EU Method A.5 (Surface Tension)
Deviations:
yes
Principles of method if other than guideline:
Deviation: The surface tension was not corrected using the Harkins-Jordan correction table as the correction is not applicable to the apparatus used. Once calibrated, the balance and ring assembly used in this test give a direct reading for surface tension that is within the required accuracy (+/- 0.5 mN/m); this is as a result of the reduced ring dimensions.
GLP compliance:
yes (incl. QA statement)
Type of method:
ring method

Test material

Constituent 1
Details on test material:
- Name of test material (as cited in study report): Hydroxyphosponoaceic acid, trisodium salt (TK13061/2)
- Physical state: Solid (white powder)
- Lot/batch No.: LIC 613/04
- Storage condition of test material: Room temperature in the dark

Any other information on results incl. tables

Reading, times and temperatures for Trisodium [carboxy(oxido)methyl]phosphonate are shown in the following table:

Time (min) Reading (mN/m) Temperature (C )
65 71.5 19.8
75 71.0 19.8
85 71.0 19.8
95 71.0 19.8
105 71.0 19.8
115 72.0 20.0

mean reading: 71.3 mN/m

Surface tension = reading x calibration factor

= 71.3 x 1.004

= 71.5 mN/m

Applicant's summary and conclusion

Conclusions:
The surface tension of a 0.999 g/L solution of Trisodium [carboxy(oxido)methyl]phosphonate has been determined to be 71.5 mN/m at 20.0 +/- 0.5C. The test material is considered not to be a surface-active material.
