Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Environmental fate and pathways

Hydrolysis

The hydrolysis rates observed were < 10% in pH 4.00, 7.00 and 9.00 at (50±0.5)°C after 5 days, and the hydrolysis half-life was extrapolated to more than 1 year under room temperature (25°C).

Biodegradation

Biodegradation in water: screening tests

Biodegradation in water: screening tests

The study from Chen Xiaoqian (2015 ) reported that 1,2,4-Benzenetricarboxylic acid, mixed dodecyl and octyl triesters was not readily biodegradable under the present test conditions. However, inherent biodegradadtion was reported.

The study from Zhang Jingji (2015) report that 1,2,4-Benzenetricarboxylic acid, mixed dodecyl and octyl triesters was primarily biodegradable, but not ultimately biodegradable. The test substance was inherently biodegradable, but fell short of the criteria for ready biodegradation.

Bioaccumulation

Bioaccumulation: aquatic / sediment

In the study from Zhang Shenghu (2015) BCF doesn't reach the steady state at the 28th day. Therefore, the BCF28, for fish was introduced to represent BCF, the mean value was 218. During the  test  (28  d),  the BCF28 value of test substance is 218,  when  exposed  to the  test substance solution of 0.142 mg/L. The substance is not considered as bioaccumulative.

Transport and distribution

Adsorption / desorption

Koc has been calculated with the test substances 1,2,4 -Benzenetricarboxylic acid, mixed dodecyl and octyl triesters using the computer program KOCWIN (v2.00). It is predicted that the substance has a Koc of 947000000 L/kg (MCI method, log Koc 8.976) and of 260000000 (Kow method, log Koc 8.416).

One study was performed in order to estimate the adsorption coefficient on soil and sewage sludge of the structural related substance 1,2,4 -Benzenetricarboxylic acid, decyl octyl ester (CAS No. 67989 -23 -5) / 1,2,4 -Benzenetricarboxylic acid, mixed decyl and octyl triesters (CAS No. 90218 -76 -1) using the HPLC-method according to OECD Guideline for the Testing of Chemicals No. 121. The log KOC is estimated to be > 5.67 and the KOC > 467735 and above 5000.

Therefore according to McCall et al., 1981 with a value of > 5000 the test substance is considered as immobile in soil.
