Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Endpoint:
surface tension
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Study period:
2018-06-15
Reliability:
2 (reliable with restrictions)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
guideline study without detailed documentation
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
OECD Guideline 115 (Surface Tension of Aqueous Solutions)
GLP compliance:
not specified
Type of method:
plate method
Specific details on test material used for the study:
SOURCE OF TEST MATERIAL
- Name of test material (as cited in study report): Jeffamine D230
- Source and lot/batch No.of test material: 6B308, 16715, 7M404 and 6M508

Key result
Surface tension:
62.95 mN/m
Temp.:
20 °C
Conc.:
1 g/L

The original internal reported values for lot 6B308 and 16715 are 51.86 mN/m and 64.6 mN/m. The low value for lot 6B308 is most likely influenced by contamination or run incorrectly and can be excluded statistically. The other lots of JEFFAMINE® D-230 amine all measure around 63 mN/M, ranging from approximately 61 to 65 mN/m. The newly collected data, with statistical exclusion of the lot in question, resets the reported 1 g/L surface tension average to 62.95 mN/m (see table below). Since the average result using reliable data is above the regulatory limit of 60 mN/m, the material is not a surfactant according to that regulation and guidance.

Average by Lot Number (included samples),

the average surface tensions for each lot number results are deliberately displayed in order from lowest to highest.

Lot Number  Average SFT (mN/m)
 7M404  61.063
 6M508  62.324
 6B308  63.535
 16715  64.88
 Average  62.95
 Standard Deviation  1.63501
 % RSD  2.597294
Conclusions:
The average surface tension of the test item is determined to be 62.95 mN/m.

Description of key information

The surface tension of the test item is 62.95 mN/m and therefore considered to be not surface active (O'Connell, 2018).

Key value for chemical safety assessment
