The log Kow of BPA PO was determined to be 3.62 in a key study carried out in accordance with OECD Guideline No. 117. Therefore, use of a linear model is considered suitable to calculate the BCF concentration factor for BPA PO. Veith et al. (1979) developed the following QSAR to calculate BDF based on a data set of 55 neutral non-ionized substances with a log kow value range of 1 - 5.5:

log BCF(fish) = 0.85 x log Kow − 0.70

(R2 = 0.897)

Applying this formula to BPA PO, an estimated BCF of 238 L/Kg ww is obtained:

Log BCF(fish) = 0.85 x 3.62 – 0.70

Log BCF(fish) = 2.377

BCF(fish) = 238.23 L/Kg ww

Executive summary:

In the absence of any available experimental data on the bioaccumulation of BPA-PO, a BCF was calculated based on the log Kow value of the substance in order to avoid unnecessary testing on animals. An estimated BCF(fish) of 238 L/Kg ww was calculated using a linear model developed by Veith et al. (1979) which performs well for substances with a log Kow of <6 (ECHA, 2017). The estimated BCF indicates the substance has a limited bioaccumulation potential and further testing is therefore not considered necessary.

Description of key information

Based on the measured log Kow values and the estimated corresponding BCF values it can be concluded that the substance has limited bioaccumulation potential. Further testing is therefore not considered necessary. The BCF in aquatic organisms was estimated using the Veith relationship which is also incorporated in EUSES and is applicable for substances with a log Kow up to 6: log BCF = 0.85 log Kow - 0.70. This results in an estimated BCF of 229.
