Executive summary:

Three rabbits were exposed to 0.5 gram of the test substance, applied onto clipped skin for 4 hours using a semi-occlusive dressing. Observations were made 1, 24, 48 and 72 hours after exposure.

No skin irritation was observed after 4 hours exposure to the test substance. In two animals, scoring for erythema was impossible after 1 hour due to orange/yellow staining of the skin by the test substance. Orange/yellow staining of the treated skin by the test substance was noted throughout the study period.

Endpoint conclusion

Executive summary:

Single samples of approximately 26 mg of test substance (a volume of approximately 0.1 ml) were instilled into one eye of each of 3 rabbits. Observations were made 1, 24, 48 and 72 hours after instillation.

Instillation of the test substance resulted in effects on the iris and conjunctivae. Irridial irritation (grade 1) was observed in one animal after 1 hour only. Irritation of the conjunctivae was seen as redness, chemosis and discharge, which had completely resolved within 24 hours in one animal and within 48 hours in the other 2 animals.

Yellow staining of the fur on the head and paws, caused by the test substance, was noted during the observation period. Remnants of the test substance were present in the eyes of all animals on day 1.

Additional information

Justification for classification or non-classification

In vivo studies are available for skin and eye irritation. Skin irritation was not observed. Very slight eye irritation was observed but the response does not fulfil the criteria for a Cat. 2 classification. The observed effects were also fully reversible.
