Test material and method may differ from what has been tested so far. Test method may need modifications in the prepaation of test solutions and a specific test medium to be used (ISO 6341 medium).
Principles of method if other than guideline:
Test material may differ from what has been tested so far. The existing dissolution studies (OECD T/D) results of one already tested sample indicate relatively poor solubility of the test material at the pH 7.4-1.5 range. However, some hazardous metals are detected in the T/D solutions, even if in small concentrations. However, additional information is needed on chemical composition (metals max ranges) of the slag. Si/FeSi silicate contains also fine particular dust/slurry material in addition to relatively inert and glass like coarse lumps and granules. The nature and properties of the fine particulate material is also needed, since the ecotoxicology of that kind of fine material may be more problematic if compared to granular form of slag. Further standard testing should apply ”realistic worst case” material in order to sufficiently clarify any potential aquatic ecotoxicological hazards the material may involve. Taking all these issues into account, the test method and preparation of test solutions may need modifications compared to the standard test method and protocol. The OECD T/D method may be suitable in preparation of the test solutions, together with ISO 6341 test medium.
